Toivo Maiste Obituary

Toivo “Whitey” Maiste, 88, of Crownsville, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on April 1, 2026. Born in Nõmmeküla, Estonia, he was the beloved son of the late August and Alice Maiste. Whitey carried deep pride in his Estonian heritage throughout his life, maintaining strong cultural ties and community connections.

He honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962. Following his military service, he pursued higher education and earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of Baltimore. He went on to dedicate many years of service to the State of Maryland as an auditor, retiring after a long and respected career.

Whitey was an active member of the Baltimore Estonian Society and St. Mark’s Estonian Lutheran Church, where he found fellowship and a continued connection to his roots. He was also a former member of the American Legion.

A devoted family man and enthusiastic sports fan, Whitey found great joy in his grandchildren, watching his granddaughter ride horses and grandsons play soccer. He also had a love for the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, and crabbing.  He cherished time spent traveling, especially his trips to Estonia.

Whitey is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Charlotte C. Maiste; loving daughter, Kimberly Roy and her husband, Kevin; cherished grandchildren, Gabrielle, Charlie, Patrick and Mitchell Roy; and his dear brothers-in-law, Charles and George Resch. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Vaino Maiste; and his sister-in-law, Marge Resch.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, Glen Burnie, on Tuesday, April 7th, from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 pm. His funeral service will be held on Weds., April 8th, at 11 am, in the funeral home chapel. Interment to immediately follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park.
