Lawrence C. Shiflett, Sr., 91, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, passed away on April 11, 2021. Larry was born in Baltimore on April 1, 1930 to the late Castie and Catherine Shiflett. He attended Gwynns Falls Park Junior High followed by the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute where he played football and graduated in 1949. Larry worked briefly at J.J. Haines, prior to entering the military, where he served his country proudly in the U.S. Marines as a Corporal and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was then hired by Westinghouse Electric where he remained for 43 years until his retirement in 1996. In his spare time, Larry had a passion for dancing at the various clubs in our area including Spice of Life, Hollywood Ballroom, the Polish Home Club and the Davidsonville Dance Club. In 1984, he and his dance partner won three first place ribbons at the Baltimore City Fair. He also enjoyed reading non-fiction and researching history. Larry was a life time member of Moose Lodge 1456, as well as a member of the American Legion Post 332, the Elks and contributed greatly to the Disabled American Veterans.
Lawrence was preceded in passing by his brother, Norman; and five of his foster siblings. He is survived by his loving sister, Catherine; son, Larry; and foster sister, Marty. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, 6 nieces- and nephews-in-law, 13 great- nieces and nephews, and eight great-great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews by his foster siblings.
The family will receive visitors at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 1 2nd Ave. SW (at Crain Hwy), on Thursday, April 22nd, from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, 1PM, in the funeral home chapel. Interment to follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
