Irene M. Pitts was born on February 19, 1944, in Harmans, Maryland to the late Joseph and Beatrice (Chandler) Mosley. She spent her early years in Anne Arundel County, where her strong spirit and resilience began to shine. She received her education through the Calvert County Public Schools system, graduating from W. Sampson Brooks Junior/Senior High School in 1962.
Irene married Quintin Dennis, and from that union, two sons were born: Lorenzo Dennis and Cameron Dennis. During that season of her life, she lived in Shady Side, where she embraced the adventures and lessons of young adulthood, marriage, and motherhood. Later, Irene married Robert L. Pitts; and from the union, her daughter, Nakia Pitts, was born.
Irene began her early career in nursing at Crownsville Hospital. Throughout the years, she embraced many lines of work, bringing determination, resilience, and care into everything she did. Her journey included working as a housekeeping supervisor at the Econo Lodge, serving as a private-duty nurse, and later working security at Value City in Harundale Mall. No matter what the title or season of life, Irene believed in showing up, working hard, and doing her part with pride and purpose. Retirement was simply another chapter for Irene, not a stopping point. Her desire to help others and live with purpose continued to guide her each day.
Above all, Irene was a devoted servant of God who deeply loved worshiping the Lord and serving others through missionary work. Her faith became one of the defining parts of her life and the way she connected with people around her.
At Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Irene’s love for God was reflected in her service, as she became deeply involved in church life and graciously served in many different roles over the years. She served as an usher, sang in the choir, hosted Bible study, and built close and lasting relationships with her church family. She treasured fellowship, conversation, laughter, and the sense of community that came from being surrounded by people who shared her faith.
Later, at St. James Apostolic Church, Irene continued walking boldly in her calling through missionary work, dedicating herself to visiting the sick and shut-in, helping at the food pantry, and offering encouragement to those in need. She also found great joy in working with children through tutoring and her puppet ministry. In 2005, The Church became Empowering Believers Church Apostolic Faith. Missionary Irene Pitts caught The Vision and continued to move in her Call. She served in The Naomi and Ruth Ministry, The Rock Steward Food Ministry, The Smoke Free Holy Ground Initiative and CHANGE Ministry, an after-school program where she impacted so many youth and young people, sharing not only lessons and creativity, but also love, patience, and guidance.
On April 29, 2026, Irene left her earthly body behind, free from illness, burdens, and troubles of this world, and made her journey to the pearly gates, where family who had gone before her lovingly welcomed her. Among those greeting her in Heaven were her husband, Robert Pitts; her son, Cameron Dennis; her sisters, Josephine Mosley, Mary Jane Mosley, and Bernice Hayes; her brothers, Charles Mosley, and Lawrence Mosley; and her niece, Sharlene Smith-Marshall. Surely there was rejoicing, loving embraces, and a long-awaited reunion as she entered eternal rest once again surrounded by those she held dear.
She leaves to cherish her memory and carry forward the stories, lessons, laughter, and love she shared throughout her life, her children; son, Lorenzo Dennis (Lakaisha), and daughter, Nakia Hayes (Rodney); grandchildren, Lorenzo (LJ) Dennis Jr., Nicholas Dennis, Tiza Dennis, Zoie Dennis, Kyan Hayes, Carter Hayes, Fantasia Thomas; great-grandchildren, Ayce Anorou, Jakayla Shirley, Jakyle Shirley, and Jazaya Jones; nieces, Carlita Lewis (Larry), Candace L. Young (Dale), Kathy Blocker (Anthony) and a host of great-nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.
A beautiful soul has taken her rest, but the light she poured into others will continue to shine for years to come.
