Helen Kazlauski Obituary

Helen Kita Kazlauski, a beloved educator, talented artist, and devout Catholic, passed away peacefully at her home in Linthicum, Maryland, on April 22, 2026. Born on February 27, 1951, in Washington, Pennsylvania, Helen’s life was marked by dedication to her family, her faith, and her creative talents.

Spending most of her life in Avella, Pennsylvania, she graduated from Avella High School. Helen earned her B.A. from California University of Pennsylvania and pursued further studies with an M.A. from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Her academic journey led her to a passionate career in education. She served as a professor at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and later at the Art Institute of Washington DC, where she inspired countless students with her profound knowledge and gentle guidance. Even after retirement, her love for teaching endured, as she embraced the role of a teacher’s assistant at Marley Middle School, continuing to touch the lives of young learners.

Helen’s remarkable artistic achievements were a source of pride throughout her life. She illustrated 62 books, each reflecting her keen eye and extraordinary talent. One of her most treasured works, a pen and ink rendering of the Cathedral in Pittsburgh, holds a permanent place of honor at the North American College in Rome. Her exceptional contribution to the arts was recognized with a nomination for a Pulitzer Prize, a testament to her impact and brilliance.

Helen’s faith was a cornerstone of her existence. A devout Catholic, she prayed daily and found comfort and strength in her beliefs. She was known for her heartfelt communication with family and friends through written letters and cards, a practice that brought warmth and connection to those she loved. In her leisure, Helen found joy in working puzzles and listening to music, with a special fondness for Toby Keith and Michael Jackson. Helen loved her pets and would say the Rosary every day with her cat, Piggy, on her lap as she never left her side. She adored animals as she grew up on a farm and was surrounded by them since she was a child. Helen leaves behind five cats: Smokey, Piggy, Toby, Torty and Zlata, all of whom she loved very much.

Helen is survived by her loving husband, Robert C. Kazlauski; her daughter, Maria; her son, Pavel “Pasha”; and her step-sons, Michael and Bobby. She cherished her grandchildren, Lincoln and Madison, who brought immense happiness to her later years. She will also be missed by her sister, Alice Kita Thomas. Helen was preceded in death by her siblings, Joseph Kita, James Kita, Barbara Kita Woleslagle and Stephen Kita; and her parents, Alice and Steve Kita.
