Alma Catherine Henckel, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed away at her residence in Millersville, Maryland on July 3, 2026. She was 87 years old.
Born on May 24, 1939, in Ellerslie, Maryland, Alma was a beloved daughter to the late Paul F. and Ruby C. Sell. She was a graduate of Mount Savage High School in 1957 where she began dating her late husband, James F. Henckel Sr.
Alma retired from Chevy Chase, where she was deeply committed to her work and formed lasting friendships. She was known for her dependability, determination and generosity. She loved gathering with friends to go out to eat, was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and kept her mind sharp with word searches.
Alma belonged to Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church and spent many years in several groups- AARP 606, Girls Night Out, Lunch Bunch, Shipley’s Book Club and Widows and Widowers.
She is survived by her son, James F. Henckel Jr. and his wife, Janet; granddaughter, Marissa Harbeson and her husband, Justin; great-grandsons, Jacob and Zachary Harbeson; step-grandchildren, Michael, Kara, Kalli (Scott), Ava and Max. Along with her brothers, Daniel and Lawrence (Dorothy) Sell; and aunt of Diana and Daniel Sell.
Alma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James F. Henckel Sr.; partner of 20 years, James S. James; sister, Jean C. Sell; and brother, Paul T. Sell.
Her family finds comfort in knowing that Alma was welcomed with open arms and is at peace in Heaven. Her memory will remain forever in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.
Alma’s viewing will be held at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, PA, Glen Burnie (at Crain Hwy) on Monday, July 13th, from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. Her funeral service will immediately follow at 12:30 in the funeral home chapel. Interment at Meadowridge Memorial Park.
