Colonel William John (Bill) Boylan, 83, died peacefully at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Pasadena, Maryland on July 6, 2022. Bill was preceded in death by his son William James Boylan. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet, and his daughter Karen (husband Scott), two grandchildren Kylie and Braden, sister Kay, and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was born on March 27, 1939, in West Chester, PA, son of Theresa and William Boylan. He was a member of the Corp of Cadets at Virginia Tech and entered military service with the Maryland Army National Guard in 1956 and received his commission in 1965. He transitioned to active duty in 1969. Bill was a military helicopter pilot and flew the UH-1 “Huey” with the 187th Assault Helicopter Company (Crusaders) and 269th Aviation Battalion during a combat tour in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971.
Bill retired from the U.S. Army on August 1, 1991, after 35 years of distinguished services. His military decorations included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal Fourth Award, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Service Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, Army Aviator Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
Bill was a member of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also belonged to the American Legion in Aberdeen, the Elks Club of Glen Burnie, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
After retirement, Bill enjoyed spending time on his boat (Fly-n-Lo), going to Raven’s games with his son and the companionship of his grandchildren.
