On May 5th, 1961, the world rejoiced as Valerie Sharlene Marshall joined us here on earth. From this moment on, she would go on to transform a multitude of lives in many positive ways. Born to parents Bernice (Mosley) Hayes and Henry Hunt in Baltimore, Maryland, she was reared and raised in the Annapolis/Skidmore area. She was educated in the Anne Arundel County Public School System, and graduated from her beloved Annapolis High School in 1979. After graduation she went on to pursue higher education at Fleet Business School which ultimately led her towards her career of choice.
Valerie spent 38 joyful years at the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) in Glen Burnie, Maryland providing outstanding internal and external customer service. During this time she worked for both the Dealer Licensing Department where she helped numerous entrepreneurs accomplish their dreams of owning a car dealership, as well as the Salvage Unit. She always provided outstanding service with a smile whether in person or over the phone. Her kind and warm personality was continuously valued and complimented by everyone she encountered. Because of her immense knowledge of the processes and procedures of the MVA, she was always happy to lend a helping hand to family and friends who needed services such as tag renewal or title registration. Working hard was of the utmost importance to her, so much so that she shared her talents through part time work at companies such as Home Depot, Costco, and the Coca Cola Company. After her retirement from the MVA in March of 2024, she began a new chapter serving as a caregiver to those who needed assistance and companionship. She remarked that she felt that she was truly walking in her calling as helping others was one of her favorite things to do. Another favorite of hers was her family.
Spending time with family and friends, both old and new, was truly one of her favorite hobbies. One of the greatest joys of her life was watching her two children, Shavonne and Reg, grow and blossom. She loved them endlessly. She was so proud of all that her Angel Love and Baby Boy, as she affectionately called them, had become through the grace of God and her wisdom, guidance, and support. She could be found talking to them on the phone, visiting and traveling with them, and supporting them in all of their endeavors. In 2014, she married her caring and loving husband, James Marshall. She and her honey, as she dearly called him, could be found at their home welcoming a steady stream of visitors, traveling to stores together, celebrating festive occasions, or at their very favorite place, serving Jesus at their church.
Valerie will most certainly be remembered for being a strong woman of faith and a servant of Jesus Christ. She rededicated her life to Christ on 7-7-17 and became a loyal soldier in the army of the Lord. She and her husband joined Fresh Anointing Apostolic Ministries where she volunteered to serve in any capacity that would glorify God. She could be found at the door of the church serving as an usher, in the front of the church reading a scripture or serving as a liturgist, or in the background preparing the sanctuary for service. She was known for having a praise that could not be contained, raising her voice unto the Lord, lifting holy hands, and worshipping all over the church building. But, she strongly believed that the church was not just a building, it was a call to service inside of you. Alongside church members she could be found traveling to convocations and distributing literature to those in the community about the goodness of the Lord.
On November 22nd, 2025, after a brief bout with lung cancer, she departed this life for her long awaited heavenly home. Waiting there to greet to her was her son, Reginald Shorter, Jr., parents, bonus father James Hayes, sister Vergie Hayes, bonus grandchildren Dontae Lumpkins and Ernest Green, Jr., as well as many other family members and friends.
She leaves to cherish her memory husband, James Marshall; daughter, Shavonne Shorter (Gaston); bonus daughters, Latarsa Marshall, Wanda Marshall, and Jamell Gaines; bonus grandchildren, Russell Lumpkins, Brittney Green, Briana Mclellan, Kevin Gaines, Jr., and Jamal Gaines; brothers, Gregory Hayes, Glenwood Mosley, Kevin Hunt, and Henry Hunt, Jr.; sisters, Jean Hunt, Sherry Hunt, and Eileen Eldridge; aunt, Irene Pitts, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family, godchildren, and friends. We thank God for her life and know that as believers in Christ we will see her again at the appointed time.
