Robert Samuel Shaffer

June 12, 1926 — July 3, 2022

Robert Samuel (Sam) Shaffer passed away on July 3, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.  Sam was born on June 12, 1926 in Preston County West Virginia, a small farm community where he lived with his parents, Rufus L. and Jesse (Beatty) and brother Charles Everett Shaffer.  Sam graduated from Kingwood High School in 1944, and then enlisted in the Army Air Corps in which he served until the end of WWII.  With support from the G.I. Bill, Sam attended West Virginia University and graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.  After the war, Sam moved to Fort Howard to look for a job and lived with his Uncle John and Aunt Dale until he wed the late Jeanne (Davis) to whom he was married for 57 years.  Sam and Jeanne had two children, Samuel Stephen and Barbara Jeanne. Sam worked for Bethlehem Steel at Sparrow’s Point for 33 years as a special engineer for galvanizing and obtained two patents for contributions to the development of that new technology.

The family moved to Glen Burnie in 1957 and joined Harundale Presbyterian Church where Sam was a beloved a member for 65 years, serving in various leadership roles including Elder and Deacon and enjoying close friendships with co-members of the McDonald Ministers, a very active volunteer group.  Sam was a student of history and loved to travel and golf.

Sam is survived by his brother, Everett Charles Shaffer and his wife Mary (Kidwell), his son Stephen and his wife and children (Mary (Saionz), Mark and Elena), his daughter Barb and her husband and son, Winslow Sully and Herbert “Bill” Jankowski, and Bill’s wife and children, (Michelle (Silverio), Isiah, Billy and Isabella).

The family will receive visitors at the Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 1  2nd Avenue, S.W., Glen Burnie, Maryland 21061 on Friday, July 22nd, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 23rd, at 1 PM at Harundale Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Harundale Presbyterian Church, 1020 East Way, Glen Burnie MD 21060.
