Robert W. Plaine

December 30, 1931 — August 25, 2019

Robert W. Plaine, age 87, died peacefully in his sleep on August 25, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s and other related health issues.

Rob was born on December 30, 1931 in South Baltimore to the late Roscoe and Ida Plaine. Four sisters had predeceased him.

He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 61 years Lynn (Evelyn) nee Mason; his loving daughter, Julie Strain and husband Chris; his devoted son, Robert Plaine and wife Rhonda; and five dear grandchildren, Amber, Abby, Tori, Fayth and Nik; a great-grandson, Dameon; and many dear and faithful friends.

Rob was a proud self-made man with an exemplary work ethic that he instilled in his children. He attended Southern High School but quit when his father died to go to work and help support his mother.

As a young man, Rob joined with two pals, Herb and Pete to form a harmonica trio. They played locally at churches and fairs around the city. He was proud that they even made it to Major Bowes Mature Hour in New York. As the boys grew older the trio broke up.

In later years, Rob began to play the harmonica again. He never had any musical training but he enjoyed playing and practiced until he was good enough to play hymns in church on Sundays right up until the time he could no longer control his playing due to Parkinson’s.

In 1955, Rob joined the Baltimore City Police Department where he served in various positions. He retired in 1982 as a Sergeant with numerous commendations. He later became Chief of Security in Annapolis at the Income Tax Building for ten years. Also in the year 1955, Rob met the love of his life Lynn, in Salem Church.

In 1956, he was drafted into the Army and they became engaged. They were separated for 16 months while he served overseas. Upon his discharge they were married.

Rob was a huge sports fan, especially of the Baltimore Colts. He volunteered to work at the games. Rob loved his church and was always active there.

Above all else, Rob loved his Lord and his family. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren. A devoted father and grandfather, he cherished family gatherings for all the holidays, especially Christmas, with Bing Crosby singing White Christmas.

He will always be in our hearts!
