Jong Ok Im, 91 of Glen Burnie, MD. Passed away on December 2, 2023. Jong Ok was born August 17, 1932 in Hwanghae Province North Korea.
Jong Ok is survived by his loving wife, Young Ae and his children; Son, Young Tek and his wife, Moon Sun Jang; Daughters, Jeyon Kang and her husband, Seung Don; Myong Pifer and her husband, Dale; Kumhui Waltrup and her husband, Stephen and Meehee Han and her husband, Yang Soo.
Jong Ok was the proud grandfather to Chae Hyun, Chae Hong, Hyun Ah, Yu Jin, Nicholas Radde (Sarah), Melissa Greer, Andrea Cinelli (Rocky), Stephanie Slusher (Jeff), Dara Keyes (Jesse), Krystine Flaherty (Nick), Yong Woo and Yong Woon. He also leaves behind 14 great grandchildren.
Jong Ok attended Yeonback Elementary School as well as Yeonback High School in North Korea. Jong Ok escaped North Korea in 1948. Upon Escaping North Korea Jong Ok served in the South Korean Army where he fought against the North Koreans earning numerous awards and commendations for his valor. Upon his retirement from the Army Jong Ok continued to serve his country as a recruiter for the South Korean Army. Later in life he embarked on a career as a retail entrepreneur until 1988 when he proudly immigrated to his adopted country The Unted States of America. Jong Ok continued his entrepreneurial spirt by establishing a successful restaurant business that thrived until his retirement in 2005.
Jong Ok worshiped at Min Jok (Korean) Presbyterian Church where he found solace in faith and community.
In Jong Ok's free time he enjoyed fishing and was also an avid reader of history and politics. He was actively involved in Korean War Veterans Affairs where he showed his dedication to fellow veterans.
A viewing will be held at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, 1 2nd Avenue SW, Glen Burnie, MD 21061 on Thursday, December 7, 2023 from 4:00 pm till 8:00pm with services beginning at 6:00 pm.
A Graveside Service will be held at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, VA 22032 on Friday, December 8th at 11 AM.
Jong Ok will be dearly missed by family, friends and all those that had the pleasure of knowing him.
