John T. Spencer

John Thomas Spencer, 76, of Severn, Maryland, passed away on February 16, 2023, at his home.  John was born in Austin, Texas, on June 21, 1946, to the late Gertrude and Allen Spencer.   He served his country proudly in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant.  After his retirement from the Army, he earned his Associate’s degree from Anne Arundel Community College.  For twenty plus years he went on to work as a field engineer, traveling around the world in service to his country.  It would be easier to count the countries he did not visit; John had the honor to experience so much of the world.  John was active at The Church at Severn Run - volunteering in the food pantry, ushering, and formerly as a Sunday School teacher.  John enjoyed watching football – especially the Cowboys and Ravens, the Orioles, and serving at the church.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Susan Spencer; his beloved children, John Spencer II and his wife Amy, Matthew Spencer, and Marcella Kolasa and her husband Cale; his cherished grandchildren, Torunn Spencer, Reidunn Spencer, Carter Kolasa, Liam Spencer, and Cooper Kolasa; and close family friends, the Jorgensens and extended family.  In addition to John’s parents, he was also predeceased by his older brother, James Spencer and his son, James Spencer who is survived by wife, Kathryn.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation at The Church at Severn Run, 8187 Telegraph Road, Severn, Maryland 21144, on Thursday, February 23rd, from 10:30 – 11:30 AM.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to any local Maryland food bank.
