Carson Broyles

On Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Carson Walter Broyles died of mesothelioma (lung cancer). Born on May 31, 1919 in Besoka, West Virginia, Carson (CW) grew up in the vicinity of Beckley, West Virginia and moved to Baltimore to work in the shipyards during the Second World War. After the war Carson earned a living as a union carpenter working mostly on installation of fine cabinets and office furniture. He worked on projects in many prominent businesses and government offices, including the US Capitol Building. After his retirement, Carson continued working with wood, making many tables and sidepieces that he gave to friends or sold in craft shows.
Carson will be remembered for his strong faith and devotion to his church, The First Baptist Church of Brooklyn where he was a member for nearly 60 years. He was a faithful member of the men's Sunday school class and often served as its teacher. Carson's faith also was expressed through writing devotional poetry and many of his poems were turned into songs. He was an ardent listener of country gospel music and attended concerts whenever possible.
Carson was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary Louise Broyles. Surviving are his son, James Broyles and wife, Alexandra, of Spring Mills, Pennsylvania; daughter Theresa Broyles Saus and husband, Frank of Annapolis; son David Broyles of New York; son Thomas Broyles, and wife, Shirley of Florida; and six grandchildren, John, Pete, Margaret (Laird), Thomas, Bridget and Kathleen Broyles; and five great grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at the Singleton Funeral Home, P.A. on Tuesday, September 6, from 4:00 PM- 8:00 PM. The family will also receive visitors on Wednesday, September 7, from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at The First Baptist Church of Brooklyn, Fifth Street and Washburn, Brooklyn. A funeral ceremony will follow at
11:00 AM. Interment will be in Glen Haven Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to either Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401 or The First Baptist Church of Brooklyn, 3801 Fifth Street, Brooklyn, MD 21225.
