Walter Wisch

WALTER JULIUS WISCH, 85 of Pasadena, passed away at his home on April 5, 2012. Walter was born in Baltimore on September 9, 1926 and on his 16th birthday enlisted in the United States Navy. During his tour of duty he served on both Naval and Merchant Marine troop and supply ships whose responsibility it was to keep our troops and allies equipped with food, ammunitions and other necessary supplies to combat the foreign enemy. A few of the areas that his ships were directed to were Northern and Southern Africa, Italy, Sicily, Greece as well as the Marshall Islands, Gilbert Islands, Mariana Islands and Caroline Islands in the South Pacific. His duty aboard ship was to man the twenty and forty millimeter guns and also the five inch gun. Several times his ships were attacked by German airplanes and he experienced directing his fire at enemy aircraft. One of the most memorable experiences was to be included with the convoy of ships directed to Murmansk, Russia. This convoy was formed off the coast of Canada and was composed of ships from many of our allied countries. The convoy consisted of approximately 400 ships and during the trip Mr. Wisch eye witnessed many ships close to his, struck and sunk by German submarine torpedoes. Walter was honorably discharged in 1946 and was recognized for his service to our country by being awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the European-North Africa or Middle East Campaign Medal. He also retired after 40 years of service in the Distribution Center with the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. Walter was an avid sportsman who loved the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene Wisch; his children, Cindi Combs; Walter David Wisch and Timothy Wisch; his grandchildren, Haley Fahey and Taylor Cramer; his great grandson, John Fahey; his brother, Edward Wisch.
