Melvin Smyers

Melvin "Jerry" Jerome Smyers, 72, of Ridgely, MD formerly of Arden on the Severn in Crownsville passed away on November 18, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Jerry as he was affectionately known was born on March 6, 1945 in Bedford County, PA to the late Melvin Roy and Carolyn Dorothy (Sparks) Smyers. He was raised by his maternal grandparents. After the passing of his grandmother he was raised by his foster parents, Webster and Lillian Bennett who raised him as their own child along with their four other sons. He enjoyed the typical games that young boys play with their brothers and sisters growing up and some not so typical games that were special to those growing up in the country. He attended school in Everett, PA. He married Norma Merritt together they had one son, Jeffrey Lynn Smyers. He met Elizabeth "Beth" M. Adams and after asking her out seven times she finally agreed, they went on their first date May 10, 1986 and were married on October 1, 1988. He worked as a Truck Driver for over 30 years for Reliable Contract Company, his C.B Handle was, "Double Jack". He loved family functions spending time with family was nice however eating was the best part of those events to Jerry. He also enjoyed dirt bike racing and hill climbing with his son Jeff, riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, camping and trap shooting.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Lynn Smyers; parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; foster parents; father-in-law, John Adams; sister-in-law Helen Bennett; aunt, Eleanor Bowie and uncle, Bob Sparks.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Beth Adams Smyers; granddaughter, Tanna Blazejak and her husband Kevin; brothers, Kenny and his wife Nancy, Donnie, Conda and his wife Carol, and Danny and his wife Charlene; sister, Libby Grub; brother and sister-in-law's, Dave Adams and his wife Ellen, Bonnie Odell and her husband Bobby, Chuck Adams and his wife Nancy, Teri Fleming and her husband John; aunt Clair Sparks and her family, Steve Clites and Kevin Brown, who Jerry and Beth thought of as sons. 23 loving nieces and nephews; numerous beloved great nieces and nephews; cousins, and special friends.

The family will receive visitors at the family owned Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 1 2nd Ave SW (at Crain Hwy) Glen Burnie on Friday, December 1st from 3-5 & 7-9 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 2nd, 1 PM, in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be held in his hometown of Everett, PA at a later date.
