Carroll Hoy

June 27, 1931 — November 6, 2013

Carroll Edward Hoy, 82, a long-time resident of Linthicum, died peacefully on November 6 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a relatively short battle with pulmonary fibrosis and cancer.

Carroll, referred to as "Hoot" by his oldest and dearest friends, was born on June 27, 1931, to the late Charles Carroll Raymond and Mary Elizabeth (Ifert) Hoy. Hoot grew up in Glen Burnie and moved to Linthicum in 1954 when he married the love of his life, June Eileen Chaney. They were married for 49 years until June's death in early 2004.

Hoot joined the Army in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1956, having attained the rank of Sergeant (E5). It was here, while working as an electrician at Army Signal Air Defense Engineering Agency, that he began his life-long interest in electricity and electronics. He remained in the Army Reserves until 1963.

Hoot spent the first half of his working career as an Electrician at Harbison-Walker Refractories Company and the last half as an Engineering Technician at University of Maryland's Physics and Astronomy Department. He retired in the mid '80s.

Throughout his life, Hoot enjoyed tinkering with machinery, watches, and optics. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. In recent years, his main pleasures were found in dining out, reminiscing, going for long drives, fishing, and spending time with family and friends both here in Maryland and in Brevard, North Carolina.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Charles Kenneth Hoy and Charles's wife, Annie May (McCall).

He is survived by his loving daughter, Debra Ann Vanghel and devoted son-in-law, James; cousin, John Mike Hoy; grandson, Michael Vanghel; granddaughter, Samantha (Vanghel) Krantz and her husband, Karl; three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Ava, and Olivia Krantz; two nieces, Lois Isaac, her husband, Warren, and their children, Bryan and Tracy, and Mary Ann Clevenger, her husband, Paul, and their children, Paul Kenneth and Aaron; and his very dear friend, Brantley Gent.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, Maryland 21122.
