Alfred Lipin

March 16, 1920 — April 13, 2012

On April 13, 2012 Alfred J. Lipin, 92, a lifelong resident of Glen Burnie, passed away peacefully at Hanover Hospital. He was born on March 16, 1920 in Pasadena, MD to the late Augusta and John Lipin. Al graduated from Glen Burnie High School and attended University of Baltimore for three years. He served in the United States Army from 1942-1946 during World War II at the Battle of Normandy. Al was Second Lieutenant and was awarded a Silver Star for his service. He was also the captain in the National Guard from 1948-1952. He was instrumental in the formation of the Glen Burnie National Guard, and the drill hall was named after him in his honor; he was also involved in the building of the original North Arundel Hospital. Al was self employed, owning a hardware store, and later served as State Legislator and a real estate agent. He served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1966-1970 and Maryland State Senate from 1971-1977. Al was an active member with Holy Trinity Catholic Church, American Legion, Post 40, VFW Post 160, Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce - organizer and past president, secretary with the Department of Licensing and Regulation from 1977-1979, founder of the Sawmill Creek Watershed Association and past member of the Glen Burnie Improvement Association, in which he served as president, the Civitan Club and the Glen Burnie Elks. Al enjoyed politics, community service and spending time with this family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Dr. Raymond Lipin. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene; four children, Mary Wilcox and husband Robert, Nancy Crawford and husband Charles, Jack Lipin and wife Lisa and Lauri Lipin-Raleigh and husband Kenneth; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Wilcox, Kimberly Wilcox-Gonzalez, Erin Lipin, Nicole Crawford, Edward Raleigh, Adam Lipin, Stephen Raleigh and Kelly Ann Raleigh; two great-grandchildren, Timothy and Benjamin, with one on the way.
